The Problem

Most software projects fail, larger organizations can often absorb the resources used and try again whereas a failure can ruin a small organization or startup. Larger established organizations often have methodologies and best practises developed over time, in an attempt to improve software quality and avoid failures. Smalller, less established organizations and startups, seldom have developed methods of working.

Most established methodologies focus on the organization and are not always applicable to smaller, less established organizations or startups. Startups in particular need guidance and best practises which are relevant to the startup context. Often resources are limited, and the software development is outsourced.

While is has become increasingly cheaper and easier to launch an online or mobile presence, the failure rate of startups remains very high. Entrepreneurial resources are often being wasted on ill-fated software projects where they could be applied to more productive activities.

The Solution

The openCTO initiative is an open-source project which aims to gather guidance, best practices, and tailor software development methodologies for startups. Since most startups are focused on Internet or mobile development, the project will focus here.

The project aims to answer the question of how to develop a website, mobile website or mobile application in a methodical manner ? When should an application rather than a website be developed ? What areas should receive more focus ( e.g UI, backend, usability, features etc ..) ? How to develop a compelling UI and user experience ? and more …

We believe that providing this guidance, assembling our cumulative experience and releasing it to the entrepreneurial community will greatly benefit future entrepreneurs and create a much more productive ecosystem for all.
